The Square Pond is situated alongside the C.M.B. Factory on the outskirts of Neath alongside the Main Road. (see map below) The pond is approximately 200m by 300m and has depths ranging from 1.5m to over 3m in some places. The pond can get heavily weeded, though the club is working to keep the weed to a minimum, and there are ample swims especially created by our members as part of an ongoing program. The water contains carp, including crucians and grass carp, roach, rudd, bream, tench, perch, and eels. Many fish have been stocked over the years, with a number of fast growing carp up to 15lb the most recent to go in. Carp have been caught up to 24lb in recent years, with at least eight different twenty pound fish caught. There are also rumours of a number of catfish of various sizes having been illegally stocked from a garden pond!
Pleasure anglers are ensured great sport with the hordes of rudd and roach which feed heavily in the summer months and make up bags of up to 20lb+, but all sport slows down after a couple of frosts due to the ponds clay base. The only baits banned are bloodworms and peanuts. Club members are able to use up to three rods subject to club rules, while day ticket anglers are only allowed one rod per ticket up to a maximum of two tickets per angler.
The club has formed a syndicate on the water to control night fishing, and only syndicate members are allowed to fish at night on the water. There is also a day syndicate which has daytime access from Monday to Friday. A power line running over part of the pond should be avoided, particularly when casting out baits. also watch out for terrapins!!! Plans to stock the pond with tench and bream are currently being discussed.

How do I get to the pond with a vehicle? I've got the necessary permit etc, but can't seem to get anywhere nearer than the grounds of the old Metal Box.
Do I need a key to be able to drive to the pond?

u need to join the day or night syndicate mate. this will give u a card to show at metal box security who will then give u a key to the gate at the rear of the factory that road will then take u right to the side of the lake. if u want to join the night syndicate there is a waiting list and u must be a member for atleast a season

Went down last Sunday for a look with my disabled dad, and just drove straight through the metal box site, didn't see a soul. Could see the gate that I needed to get through but nobody anywhere to give me a key. Maybe I'll have better luck midweek. Thanks for the advice though.

if you have been a syndicate member for three years then you should know how to get there, as well as being aware that you need to stop at security for a key, any reason why you didn't, just wondering.

Well, as I said above, despite the best intentions, and paying for syndicate permits, I've been either too ill or busy to do any fishing since I joined the syndicate. I had a walk round before I joined, but did it on foot down the canal path. Spoke to a disabled bloke who was fishing and he had his car with him, so I assumed I'd get a key or something when I joined the syndicate. I was expecting to see some form of security at the metal box, but there was nobody at all and we just drove around, realized we couldn't get through the gate and gave up. Which is why I posted. Presumably they don't have any security there on a Sunday, 'cos thats what day I last tried. As a matter of interest, will I get to keep the key when I show my pass, or do I have to check in with security each time to get a key?

Ok, everything above cleared up now so no more problems there. I'm hopefully healthy again and looking forward to a break in the weather so I can dust the rods off and get to know the Square a bit better.
However, I couldn't get to the syndicate meeting last night. Can anyone tell me briefly, what was discussed?
PM if necessary. Thanks.

really it was Lloyds plans for the coming year, including weed treatment, adherence to guidelines, a ban on the use of backleads in summer, and the strict enforcement of attendance of at least two organised work parties, which will be on the last sunday of each month, unless it is a bank holiday when it will be the sunday before. members who work weekends will be offered alternative weekday work parties if possible. have you renewed your synd permit yet, as the closing date was yesterday.

Great, thanks for that. And, yes I've renewed my permit so you'll probably be bumping into me some time soon.

Hi, guys new to forum, been a member for over a year now and was woundering how do i go about becoming a syndicate member ? Contact details etc, looking to give the square pond a go this year if possible. There does not seem to be much info about the lake. I walk the lake regular with the dog but rearly see people fishing there. If the syndicate is limited to 30 people and syndicate members are not fishing there is there a control for this ? Seems to be a waste of syndicate spaces if not. Anyone caught anything there recently ? Tight lines Ryan

What is happening with the square pond now I’ve heard skewen angling has been wound up and no longer operates, if this is the case how would I fish the square pond as I have just got back into my carp angling, and enjoyed fishing there many years ago
