Skewen A.C. Welcome to the 2010 club newsletter. The club AGM will take place on Wednesday, January 26th 2011, at the Rock and fountain, Skewen, at 7.30pm prompt. The proposals and nominations for officers need to be in the hands of the secretary by midday, on the 5th January 2011 . Proposals and nominations should be sent to; The secretary, Skewen A.C., 58 the highlands, Skewen, Neath, sa10 6pd. Or Mike.doyle@ntlworld.com It is your responsibility to ensure that any sent in are received in time and have the proposer and seconders name included.
Email addresses would allow the club to communicate our membership easier and quicker. If you want to be included in regular newsletter updates please let the secretary have your email address.
The club is now a limited company. What does this mean to you? Well nothing really. We will carry on running the club as we always have, though now the posts of chairman, secretary, and treasurer are also company directors. This has been done to protect the clubs assets and limit the liability of our members. Changes in the way the sport is controlled also mean that all committee members have now got to be CRB checked, and there are also restrictions on who can be a company director. (ie no bankrupts, criminals etc)
Work parties on the square pond have been carried out by the syndicate members led by the groups’ leader, Gary. The work on the gnoll pond this year been carried out by one of the committee and resident bailiff, Steve with help from a few other anglers. The committee would like to thank both of these groups for their work.. As the clubs waters and the number of anglers fishing increase, more work is required to keep the waters in good shape. If anyone wants to help the club please contact any committee member to join in the fun!
The clubs Website has been revamped over the last few months; it should be updated regularly now. If you have anything you would like to add to it such as pictures or stories send them to a committee member. If you have any ideas on improvements, or would like to see something different on the site please let us know.
Bailiff patrols of club waters will continue through the winter and coming season. While There seems to have been a decrease in people fishing without permits, mostly due to our bailiffs being on the bank a lot, especially those at the gnoll ponds, we are committed to clamping down on anyone not buying a permit, and will also take action on any angler who is abusive to our bailiffs, or is found to have left any litter. Please remember that it is your responsibility to make sure that your peg is clean before, after, and during fishing, and that our bailiffs have the authority to check permits and rigs, and will turn people away from our waters for antisocial behaviour.
PROJECTS. Many of the clubs’ members may not be aware that we are currently undertaking some major projects within the club. These are the all ability access areas on the Gnoll fishpond, and the possible construction of a new pond in the Neath area. At the time of press the all ability access at the gnoll has passed the planning stage and has been placed out to tender. The new pond will be around 20 to 30 pegs and will be a match orientated water, stocked with fish more suitable for this type of angling. (There may be more news of both these projects in the AGM) These projects will provide over thirty new pegs for members, as well as providing a completely new fishery.
The annual Stocking. This last year took the form of a netting of small silver fish (2-6” in size) from the square pond and these were put into the neath canal. The committee is looking to formalise a plan for netting and stocking our waters which will see a rotation of stocking each water in turn over a six year period, with some fish being purchased and some being netted from our waters that have an excess of them. This will not only prove cost effective but will also allow us to manage our fisheries better.
Matches: the clubs match team has once again won the WFCA local league, well done lads. Apart from this series of events there has been little or no match activity on our waters. It seems people want bags that the commercial waters can provide from everywhere they go fishing, but our waters have never produced bags like these in matches. We have predominately pleasure fisheries, though the new water may be a different proposition.
Fishing taster sessions were held on the gnoll community pond as part of national fishing week which now runs for a month! The general coarse event was supported by the EA, who provided free rod licences and tackle and bait who provided terminal tackle and bait for the participants.. The event saw around twenty junior and senior (some very senior!) anglers have a try at fishing and all succeeding in catching fish. They were shown how to cast, and how to handle fish safely. The weather stayed fine during the day and made the fishing enjoyable, despite the efforts of the coaches; the anglers all enjoyed their day and most even joined the club as a result. Tight lines
