Went for a stroll along the canal bank this morning, past the old ship pub and up towards the Neath Estuary cut. Saw lots of shoals of small/medium Rudd and Roach and I noticed something that gave me a fair cause for concern. Many of these fish were sporting large white spots, while it is a possibility that these were scars due to unsuccessful pike attacks, the numbers were to numerous to be these surely? I am concerned they may have some kind of disease?

Thanks for reporting this. I know alot of the roach in the canals and bottom pond suffer from black spot and this is a parasite and there is no need for concern. Not sure about white spot though. Will look into it. Thanks

I'm down the canal most days although not fishing and its not due to pike attacks its definitely some sort of fungal infection. Some of the fish have what can only be described as cotton wool around their 'tail wrist'. I've seen a couple with this white fungus trailing behind their tail in the water. Others have it to a lesser degree. This is when it looks like white patches not so much spots. It seems to affect this same spot on the fish in the main however I have seen it near the head area as well. Only seems to be affecting the Roach/Rudd - although obviously these are the fish we see most often. Seems to be quite a few like this. At a guess about 10 - 15% of what I see.

Canalman I couldnt have described it better, what alarmed me was how common it actually seems to be

Phone the nrw hot line on your rod licence to report this. The club will get follow up reports off the fishery officer who checks it out. Will check wed, next day off. Cheers

It may not be "Cotton wool" There are a few different fungal infections.. Here's a few words from the Environment Agency regarding causes and cures ( not a lot you can do).. There may be a relevant passage or two in the second part of this dialogue.. Re:- Temperature levels...
