Work parties on the square pond have been carried out by the syndicate members led by the group’s leader, Lloyd, and Gareth. This included peg repairs, path improvements, and netting the pond for a fish health check prior to any moving of fish.
There has been no work on the gnoll pond this year, but we have permission to add more pegs if we can get enough volunteers to help make them, together with the committee and resident bailiff, Steve, with help from a few other anglers. Anyone on the waiting list for the night syndicate is reminded that you must attend at least one work party before being considered for a place As the clubs waters and the number of anglers fishing increase, more work is required to keep the waters in good shape. If anyone wants to help the club, especially by joining the committee as we are always looking for new members, this year will see our chairman, Dave Pickin, stand down as officer after many years service. The committee would like to thank Dave for his input to the club over his years as chairman and treasurer. We are looking for a Treasurer, and possibly a chairman, so contact any committee member to join in the fun! Even if you can only help out occasionally we would appreciate it.
The clubs Website has been quiet over the last few months, due to members not passing on catch reports etc. it should be updated regularly now as it has been taken over by one of the committee. If you have anything you would like to add to it such as pictures or stories send them to a committee member. If you have any ideas on improvements, or would like to see something different on the site please let us know. There is also a friends of Skewen a.c. page on face book, while syndicate members have their own facebook page.
Bailiffing of club waters will continue through the winter and coming season. While There seems to have been a decrease in people fishing without permits, mostly due to our bailiffs being on the bank a lot, especially those at the gnoll ponds, we are committed to clamping down on anyone not buying a permit, and will also take action on any angler who is abusive to our bailiffs, or is found to have left any litter.
Please remember that it is your responsibility to make sure that your peg is clean before, after, and during fishing, and that our bailiffs have the authority to check permits and rigs, and will turn people away from our waters for antisocial behaviour.
PROJECTS. the dredging of the tenant canal by the canal company. At the time of press the Tennant canal dredging continues with work being concentrated around the cadoxton and aberdulais areas and the footpaths also being made more accessible, Including the disrupted area at Neath Abbey. The club entered into negotiation recently to lease one of the lakes at Glynneath, alongside the A465. After several meetings and input from the NRW officers, the owner decided against a long term lease so this fell through. The good news is that a second project to gain a lease on a pond in Aberavon is nearing fruition, and should be sorted by the AGM. This pond will provide members with a match/pleasure fishery with secure parking and all ability access. Watch this space!
The annual Stocking this last year will take the form of a number of tench and bream being stocked into the Lower Gnoll pond, hopefully before Christmas. The committee has previously agreed on a plan for netting and stocking our waters which will see a rotation of stocking each water in turn over a six year period, with some fish being purchased and some being netted from our waters that have an excess of them. This will not only prove cost effective but will also allow us to manage our fisheries better. This year saw the square pond being netted with silver fish, ie roach, rudd, and bream, less than 6 inches in length being transferred to the Tennant canal, also a number of carp below 12lb in weight were removed and put in the Tennant canal.
Matches: the clubs match team has taken part in the WFCA local league but unfortunately failed to win, well done lads. Apart from this series of events there has been little or no match activity on our waters. It seems people want bags that the commercial waters can provide from everywhere they go fishing, but our waters have never produced bags like these in matches. We have predominately pleasure fisheries, though the new water may be a different proposition.
Fishing taster sessions were held on the gnoll community pond and the gnoll fishpond as part of national fishing week which now runs for a month!. The general coarse event was supported by the EA, who provided free rod licences, and Tackle and Bait who provided terminal tackle and bait for the participants.. The event saw over fifty junior and senior (some very senior!) anglers have a try at fishing and all succeeding in catching fish. They were shown how to cast, and how to handle fish safely. The weather stayed fine during two of the days, and showery for the other day and made the fishing enjoyable, despite the efforts of the coaches and weather; the anglers all enjoyed their day and most even joined the club as a result.
The club has secured funding for two new level 1 coaches. If you are interested and are able to give up a few hours of your time occasionally, contact the secretary who will give you more information on the course that needs to be done, and how often you will be asked to help out with coaching duties. These coaching sessions provide a great way to get people interested in fishing. The club is also looking for helpers on these coaching days so if you would like to help out contact the club.
Don’t forget that if you want to change any rules, change or add to the committee make up, or have any ideas about how we should be doing things then the AGM is the time for you to voice your opinions about how YOUR club is run. Make sure that you put any nominations or proposals in writing to the secretary by the 22nd of January, either by post or email
