The Neath canal can be split into two separate parts. The upper, runs from just below GlynNeath to Resolven road bridge and has only recently been renovated. It is narrower than the Tennant canal but is deeper, with average depths of 1.5 to 2m. The stock density is at present fairly low, with only limited stocking of fish by the EA, mostly Rudd, and a few bream tench and carp. Between Resolven and Tonna, the canal has suffered serious pollution, and is still in the process of recovery. The lower section, from Tonna to Briton Ferry, is a weedy and slow flowing waterway running through the center of Neath town before ending up at the Wharf in Briton ferry. It holds carp, tench, bream, roach, rudd, perch, eels and a few chub and pike, as well as the odd trout. It is between 1.5 to 2m deep, and up to 12 to 15m wide in places.
Unlike the Tennant canal, this one produces fish during the winter months to the pleasure angler, and match anglers enjoy good sport during the summer months in club events. A stocking program by the club has also seen over 5000 roach added to the canal in 2004.

the plan last year was there was gonna be a summer league run on the canal so that swims would be dragged on a regular basis and kept clear. unfortunately this did not materialise. also the canal company is supposed to be cutting the weed on a regular basis but i do not know why it wasnt done. the club is looking for bailliffs to patrol the canal as it does not have enough man power to look after all its waters. if anyone is interested in becoming a bailliff please let us know. hopefully there will be more interest in matches on there this year and with the water getting used more pegs will be kept clear. since the creation of commercial fisherys alot of anglers have stopped fishing the canals. now the pegs dont get dragged as before u would keep pegs clear to fish and even rake it just before you fished just to colour the water up. now with out anyone fishing them they have just become choked with weed. it amazes me just how many dont even own a rake
